On A Roll

lightfootband

Hi everyone
This is going to be a short one.
Beginning October 25, we did three shows within nine days: Burlington, Orillia, and Hamilton. As part of “Lightfoot Days” in Orillia, we hosted two workshops and participated in a panel discussion.
Before I review those shows, allow me to do a bit of a preamble.
I got into the music business originally because I love music a lot, and I love performing it even more.
Then, when I started doing it, which would have been in 1974, I discovered another side to it that I hadn’t anticipated.
Synergy is one of those buzzwords that motivational speakers use, and it has become part of the pantheon of tedious business cliches. For example: Bandwidth, Circle Back, Incentivise, Low Hanging Fruit, Moving On, Bottom Line, etc.
But I can’t think of a better word to describe what happens when two or more elements combine to make something bigger than the sum of their parts. Chemistry is along the same lines, but still……
When those “elements” are people who are committed and enthused, really cool things occur.
Not all of the dozens of bands I’ve been a part of over the years were like this, but that first one in 1974 was. It was called Walkers Road. We were young and naive, and none of us were virtuosos, but we did some amazing things. That will take a different post to describe.
The Lightfoot Band is probably the best example of synergy I’ve experienced in my career. On a good night, it doesn’t feel like five guys playing and singing. It’s more like a texture. An exciting but mesmerizing melange of sounds that carry me away.
And the Burlington, Orillia, and Hamilton shows were all good nights.
Now, if only we could get some keyboards into the mix. Most people who do the house sound have a guitar bias. Maybe I could slip them a hundred bucks during sound check.
